Access For Sight Impaired Consumers
Successful Initiatives!
During the past twelve years, Access for Sight-Impaired Consumers has
approached several corporations and government bodies to garner their
cooperation and support in improving equitable access for our members.
Our most recent initiatives include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Polara Engineering of Fullerton California was recipient of the 2005 CNIB Winston Gordon award for their innovative design of the Navigator II accessible pedestrian signalling device. Please visit Polara Engineering Honoured With Winston Gordon Award for more information.
- Effective January 2005, the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (TransLink), B.C. Transit, their subsidiaries, and West Coast Express accept the CNIB National Identification card (NID) as a valid pass to travel on public transit (excluding HandyDART) throughout the province. It is also accepted as a concession pass for BC Ferry Services.
- In 2004, Rogers Wireless recognized the insurmountable challenges their visually impaired customers have when accessing telephone listings and made the Roger's Wireless introduces 411 directory assistance service at no charge to customers who are blind or sight-impaired.
- Shaw Cable customers can now request their monthly bill in Braille or large print and can also sign up for online billing and use a variety of technologies, such as text-to-speech software, to ensure they can read or review their monthly statement. - The installation of high-color contrasting tactile platform edging on
all SkyTrain platforms, the installation of floor enunciators on all
multi-level SkyTrain and Translink elevators, and the pending installation
of improved lighting at all SkyTrain Expo Line stations.
- The installation of rear-window captioning and descriptive video service
(RWC/DVS) originally at Famous Players theatres across Canada. Famous Players was bought out in recent years by Odeon Cinaplex who continue to offer movies with RWC/DVS
- An amendment to the Telus Communications tariff which provides an
automatic directory assistance call completion (ADACC) service at no
additional cost to registered "B" customers.
- The provision for Entertainment Book indexes in alternate formats
for all publications sold across Canada.
- Providing important information and feedback to manufacturers of
accessible pedestrian signal devices regarding their design, functionality
and standards of operation.

Elections BC Receives High Marks For Accessibility
ASIC's list of past and present initiatives changes constantly as
projects are completed and new requests are brought forth.
